Study Abroad Travel Tips, Advice & Answers

  1. Plan to wear long pants (jeans) on the plane. Although the weather is warm the interior of the planes can get downright cool.

  2. Bring a good pair of comfortable walking shoes. We will be doing a good bit of legwork in both Mexico and Jamaica.

  3. Bring Imodium (or related product). More than likely you will need this in Mexico, but probably not for Jamaica.

  4. If you are on some type of medication, do not pack it in your checked baggage. Carry it in a fanny pack or backpack. Same goes for vitamins or supplements.

  5. Leave valuable items, such as watches, jewelry, etc. at home! You do not need to be a fashion statement.

  6. Cameras! I recommend purchasing single-use models. If you lose or misplace them or have them stolen you haven’t lost much. I also suggest that you get a single-use camera with a panoramic capability. This will greatly enhance your memories of some of the sights you will encounter.

  7. Pack wisely. You do not need to take everything you own. Surprisingly, you will not need as much as you think you will.

  8. Bring a pair of water socks. You will definitely need these in Jamaica and possibly in Mexico. Also, bring a plastic poncho.

  9. You should bring things like personal items, band aids, chewing gum, your favorite candy, smokes, etc. because such things are sometimes not available or cost a lot more because of import duties.

  10. Money! You will need between $300 and $400 for site visits, van rentals, admissions charges, etc. Other spending money should be in the form of small denomination currency--$1, $5, and $10 amounts. Major credit cards (Master & Visa) can also be used for purchases.

  11. Electrical current in both Mexico and Jamaica is the same as the U.S.
