Podcasting

Podcasting refers to audio and video (and can include other files such as PDFs) that are delivered to users on a subscription basis--most typically through iTunes (a free tool for organizing and viewing/listening to digital media). You subscribe to the podcast and when new "episodes" are posted, they automatically show-up in your iTunes podcast section. So you do not have to go to a website and check for new episodes and download them. Once you are subscribed, it happens automatically.

As an instructor, you may wish to produce and publish podcasts for your courses. These podcasts could be audio of class lectures, video of you talking about some concept from your class, or more highly produced media depending on your needs, skill, and time! Podcast Log in page Brief description of how you do it: The first issue is to plan your podcast and how you will create the media. Once that task is out of the way, you can use the Bainbridge State College Podcast Server to create a "channel" for your podcast. Once your channel is created, you upload your first podcast and provide students with a subscription button. Students subscribe and will then receive your first podcast and automatically receive new media that you publish on your channel. So once the initial set-up is out of the way, the only challenge is producing the media for each episode. Learn more about using the Podcasting Server.

About the Podcasting Server

To gain access to the server, you must first register. Click on the Request Podcasting Channel link. You will be asked if you have an account or not. Click "no" and you will be prompted to register for access and to create your "channel." The channel you create is a unique podcast channel to which students can subscribe. You may need a separate one for each class you teach, or you may have one channel per topic that you use across several of your classes. Once you register and get approval of your channel, you can begin uploading to it immediately (though it may take 24 hours or more for your channel to be created).

How is podcasting different from just using the server to post media files?

Technically, there is not much difference between creating a podcast on the server and just using it to playback media files in your course. For both, you create channels and upload media to them. The difference is that for a true podcast, your users subscribe to it in something like iTunes so that they receive new "episodes" that you create as soon as you post them. For posting media in your Vista course, students just click on a link and the media plays. They do not need iTunes and will never know where the media is coming from. If you just want to post a few media files here and there throughout your course, the latter method is what you want. But if you plan to create and publish a series of media files that you want students to receive as they are published, then you may want to consider a true podcast.

What material can I podcast?

In general, the idea of podcasting is to push out to others media you create yourself though there may be situations in which you use media produced by others. If you do this, please remember that you are subject to copyright laws.

So how do I use the Podcasting Server?

You will need to create an account and request a channel on our Podcasting Server (Click on the Request Podcasting Channel Link. You will be asked if you have an account or not. Click "no" and you will be prompted to register for access and to create your "channel"). Once you have done this and the account and channel are approved, you have access to the Podcaster Manual which details how to manage your channel.

Please note: using the Podcasting Server as a repository for your media is different than using it as a podcasting channel. If you are not going to create an actual podcast to which student subscribe, you will use the embed or link code method to put the media into your Vista course.
