Class Policies
ATTENDANCE: You are expected to come to every class and to be prepared to contribute to the learning experience. Much of the value and meaning of this class will come from what happens in class, so you must be here in order to experience the benefits. To succeed in this class, you must be here--on time. However, at times we all experience sickness, car breakdowns, and emergencies, and you will not be unduly penalized for a day or two missed. I will maintain a record of your attendance in class. Furthermore, if you miss more than four classes, per Learning Support Division policy, you may be failed in this class except for highly unusual circumstances. In order to assure that you are not failed after four absences, it is the student's responsibility to keep an open line of communication with the instructor. In addition, absence from class for whatever reason does not excuse you from full responsibility for class work or assignments missed. Students on school-related activities should inform me beforehand of their intended absences.
PROMPTNESS: Tardiness is a distraction.
COMPUTER USAGE IN CLASS: It is not appropriate to surf the web, work on other course work, or work on CourseCompass while class is in session. The only time you should be doing work on the computer is if the instructor has given you class time to do assigned work.
PROGRESS: Because you are responsible for your performance and progress in this class, please talk to me if you experience difficulties. Also, please note that this course will require time outside of class, in order to be successful.
CLASSROOM CONDUCT: You are expected to treat your fellow students and instructor with respect and fairness and to refrain from any disruption to the learning environment. Disruptive behavior includes, but is not limited to, sleeping in class, talking while the instructor is talking, coming in late, gathering belongings before class has been dismissed, and bringing anything disruptive to the classroom, such as pets, children, or phones.
CELL PHONES/RINGING DEVICES: These devices do not belong in the classroom. However, if you choose to bring one to class and it rings or vibrates without prior conversation with your instructor........be prepared to be asked to leave the classroom and you will forfeit any grade taken that class day.
ACADEMIC DISHONESTY: Your work must be your own. Cheating and plagiarism are handled according to the procedures outlined in your Student Handbook.
ADA STATEMENT: The college is committed to providing accessibility to all students in accordance to ADA/504 guidelines. Students should contact the Coordinator of Testing and Disabilities, Jessica Long. She is located in the library and her phone number is 248-2579.
LEARNING SUPPORT POLICY: Degree students who fail to exit a Learning Support area in THREE attempts will be suspended from taking any classes for THREE years within the University System of Georgia. All grades except W count as an attempt. Suspensions may be appealed, and two more attempts may be granted in an area. If a fifth attempt is needed, the student may take that Learning Support course ONLY.
EARLY EXIT: Students in their second or more attempts in an exit-level class may request an "early exit" at midterm in lieu of a retest at the semester's end. There will be no refund of fees or books because such students are still registered in class. The grade for the class will be assigned at the end of the semester.
WITHDRAWALS: To officially drop a course without penalty, you must complete a Drop/Add form, with appropriate signatures, before midterm. Please note that you cannot drop your Learning Support classes and keep your credit classes. In addition, although a W does not count as an attempt in Learning Support, it does count against the requirement for a 67% success rate for Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) for financial aid. Withdrawal after midterm produces an automatic “F,” unless approved by the Vice President of Academic Affairs.
INCOMPLETES: An "I" (incomplete) grade is available only for nonacademic reasons. A student must secure permission for an incomplete grade PRIOR to the ending of the semester. Students must complete the missed assignments/tests during the next semester or the grade becomes an "F" automatically. Students may not re-register for the class.
Grades:
Grades will be taken from two sources: CourseCompass and ExamView.
CourseCompass: an online resource requiring a student access key that is packaged with your textbook. This work will be completed online from any computer having internet access. If you use this at home, I would recommend a broadband connection, rather than dialup. You will also have to install plugins required for using this site. The student access key can also be purchased online or can be bought in the bookstore. Once logged into CourseCompass, you can access your textbook online. Therefore, it is not entirely necessary to purchase a textbook. You will have full access to every page from the CourseCompass site. CourseCompass work will consist of homework assignments, quizzes, and tests. All homework assignments will have due dates, therefore it is of utmost importance that you check the course calendar to determine all due dates as material is posted. The homework assignments will be 30% of your overall grade for Math 0099, quizzes will count 20%, and tests will count 10%. Once an assignment, quiz, or test has been completed, your average in CourseCompass is automatically updated. Any homework assignments not completed by the due date become a zero. CourseCompass will require out of class time. Online work is time consuming, therefore, plan your time accordingly. At the end of the semester, the three (3) lowest quiz grades and one (1) lowest test grade will be dropped. No homework grades will be dropped.
Procedures for CourseCompass:
Homework (30%)
- Online and have unlimited attempts
- Will be completed on your own time
- Highest attempt score becomes grade
- Access is denied at 11:59 PM Eastern time on the due date
- Not timed
Quizzes (20%)
- Online and will be done in class
- Will consist of five (5) problems
- There will be no makeups
- You must be on time for class
- Must be present when the quiz is started
Tests (10%)
- Online and have one attempt
- Will be completed on your time
- Must be completed with 120 minutes
- Will be posted approximately every other week on Monday
- Will have until Friday of that week to complete
ExamView: testing program only housed on campus. We will test in ExamView on average once per week. Testing can occur at the beginning or end of class. If testing occurs at the beginning of class, it will have a time limit. At the end of the semester, the three (3) lowest ExamView grades will be dropped. There are no makeups for ExamView tests. Your ExamView average will account for 40% of your final grade. ExamView is accessed from the desktop - Student applications - Testing - ExamView 5. Name will be your first name, last name - ID will be the last 5 digits of your student ID (not your social - your student ID beginning with 9000...). After every ExamView test, your grade will be entered into CourseCompass, therefore your average in CourseCompass will reflect your CourseCompass work as well as your ExamView tests completed in class.
Grade Summary:
CourseCompass: (online)
Homework - 30%
Quizzes - 20%
Tests - 10%
ExamView - 40% (in class)
**IMPORTANT** - ANY CLASS DAY THAT A GRADE IS TAKEN (CourseCompass quiz or ExamView test) AND THE STUDENT IS LATE FOR CLASS (no matter the reason), THE STUDENT FORFEITS THAT GRADE AND WILL RECEIVE A ZERO.
Exit Requirements for Learning Support Mathematics
FIRST: Class average of at least 75%
SECOND: Score of 37 or greater on the COMPASS algebra exam
You must meet these requirements IN ORDER. In other words, you cannot take the COMPASS Exam unless you have a class average of at least 75%.
You are allowed one retest if not successful on the first attempt.
Expectations:
As your instructor, I will present ideas and concepts to you as simply as I know how, along with examples and tips on working the problems. I will answer any questions you may have, look at any problems you have attempted, or offer another approach. However, I will not reteach a lesson for someone who made the decision not to attend class.
As the student, I expect from you (but not limited to) the following:
To attend class regularly
To come to class prepared with book, paper, pencil, etc.
To come to class having studied and attempted problems
To read each section, take notes, and ask questions
To make an effort to learn something new and share your ideas
To be an active participant: not just a chair warmer
To accept the consequences of your actions or lack thereof
