Learning Support Changes
Beginning with fall semester, 2012, the University System of Georgia will implement new standards for admission to degree programs. These standards will affect you if you are currently placed in Learning Support.
Students currently placed or who will place in Learning Support must meet these new standards for fall semester, 2012, to remain in or to enter into the AA or AS degree programs.
Here are the new standards:
USG COMPASS Minimum Score Requirements for Admissions to a Degree Program |
|||
For admission, applicants must meet the minimum score requirements listed to the right and they must not place into all 3 Learning Support areas. |
Algebra |
Reading |
English |
20 |
62 |
32 |
|
Therefore, if you have already placed in Reading 0097 and/or English 0097, you must pass Reading 0097 AND English 0097 before fall semester, 2012. In addition, if you placed in all three areas of Learning Support, you must exit at least one area—you must pass the 0099-level class in at least one area with a grade of A, B, or C.
The new standards also limit the number of attempts you can use to pass a Learning Support area. Students have TWO attempts to exit reading, TWO attempts to exit English, and THREE attempts to exit math. All attempts before fall semester, 2012, will be counted toward these totals, and all grades except W count as attempts. If you are in a degree program and have already exceeded the number of attempts in any area without exiting the area, you will be suspended from degree programs for one year.
If you do not meet these new standards, you may enroll in a certificate, diploma, or Applied Science degree program (AAS) in our Technical Studies or Health Sciences divisions. However, if you enroll in a technical program here or in any Technical College System of Georgia institution and later decide to work toward a degree with us or at any University System of Georgia institution, you still must meet the degree requirements at the time you apply for a degree program. If you sit out your suspension, you may retest on the COMPASS after your year-long suspension.
For new students who have yet to take the COMPASS or for students sitting out a suspension and preparing to retest, we will offer remediation through MyFoundationsLab, an inexpensive, 10-week online program that allows students to strengthen skills in reading, writing, and/or math at their own pace. More information will be available soon on how to purchase MyFoundationsLab. In addition, free online help for remediation is available here.
