Peer Review for Narrative Essays

1. What is the essay’s topic and purpose? Is it one of the assigned topics or a variation of it? Does the draft show promise of fulfilling the assignment?

2. Look at the essay as a whole. What is the narrative point? Is it stated or implied?

3. Look at each content (not dialogue) paragraph separately. (Write directly on the essay, adding comments on this page.)
 

a. Does the paragraph develop the thesis? Write YES or NO next to the paragraph.
b. Is anything confusing? Write HUH.  Is anything obvious? Write DUH.
c. Should some paragraphs be deleted? Be divided into two or more paragraphs? Be combined? Be put elsewhere? Use X’s, paragraph marks, and arrows.
d. Do the sentences lean into one another? Underline any that need transitional words or need to be better related.
e. Is the paragraph adequately developed? Write MORE by details that need elaboration or explanation.


4. Is the point of view consistent? (no U-turns or slips from 1st or 3rd)

5.  Is the verb tense consistent?

6.  Are new paragraphs used for new speakers? Is the attribution apparent?

7. What are the paper’s chief strengths?

8. Make two specific suggestions that you think will help the author improve the paper.


Peer Review for Exemplification Essays

2. Look at the essay as a whole. Highlight its thesis statement and supporting topic sentences. Comments?

3. Look at each paragraph separately. (Write directly on the essay, adding comments on this page.)

a. Look at the topic sentence you’ve already underlined. Does it relate to the thesis? Write YES or NO next to the topic sentence.
b. Is anything confusing? Write HUH.  Is anything obvious? Write DUH.
c. Should some paragraphs be deleted? Be divided into two or more paragraphs? Be combined? Be put elsewhere? Use X’s, paragraph marks, and arrows.
d. Do the sentences lean into one another? Underline any that need transitional words or need to be better related.
e. Is the paragraph adequately developed? Write MORE by details that need elaboration or explanation.
